Abstract

During 16th century, there were several movements in the subcontinent that spread mental turmoil and social unrest, the general impression of these movements is that they created a rift in the religious beliefs of the Muslims of the subcontinent. Under the influence of Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Akbar, the ground was being paved for liberalism and atheism. In these circumstances, Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi expressed his reaction against these movements and ideologies and made efforts on clarifying the eternity and necessity of Islamic beliefs and the Prophethood of Muhammad (P.B.U.H).He played an important role in protecting the Muslim government and society from the negative effects of atheism and liberalism. In the context of these efforts of Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi, he is considered a great religious leader and a revivalist. Many scholars and leaders of the Islamic world highlighted his thoughts and followed his footsteps for the revival of Islamic values. However, a well-known German Orientalist, Anne Marie Schimal described Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi's role as an attempt to achieve political ambitions. This view of Anne Marie Schmal is very important because in Islamic history, Sheikh Ahmed Sirhindi is known as a great reformer who played an everlasting role for the survival of Muslims in the subcontinent. Anne-Marie Schimal highlighted that Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi, mystical character differs from the historical and traditional role of Sufis. In the subcontinent, traditional Sufi thought promoted Hindu-Muslim harmony and social tolerance. Despite religious differences, the Sufis referred to human social values as introductions where religion was not a reference to a fundamental identity, while Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi and his followers referred to religion as a reference to a national identity and became the basis of bi-national ideology in India. Therefore, this paper investigates her views, that to what extent it is correct, because this view of Anne Marie Schimal regarding the efforts of Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi may be of concern to many of his devotees and followers.
